The Secret to Tom Brady’s Newfound Speed
Tom Brady may be one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the NFL, but he’s not known for extending plays with his feet. When he attempts to run and scramble, he often looks awkward and uncomfortable.
However, this off-season Brady made a commitment to improve his speed—the one glaring weakness in his game. “I focused a lot this off-season on those mechanics to allow me to make a couple of those plays this year,” Brady told ESPN’s Seth Wickersham.
Under the guidance of renowned throwing coach Tom House, Brady performed the Fogel Drill, designed to improve his footwork and balance, which in turn improves his throwing mechanics when on the move and allows him to get extra zip on the ball because he is more stable and can drive through the ground.

Now, we still won’t call him fast, but the results of his hard work have been promising. Just look at his second-quarter pass against the Chicago Bears in Week 8. He saw a hole in the line, scrambled forward to the line of scrimmage and threw a 22-yard strike to Rob Gronkowski that nearly resulted in a touchdown.
Here’s how to perform the Fogel Drill:
- Set up 2-4 cones on the field where a wide receiver would typically catch a pass from you. These are your targets.
- As a partner calls out each movement, either shuffle laterally, sprint forward or backpedal, changing direction as quickly as possible.
- On your partner’s signal, throw a simulated pass (no ball) to the target he specifies.
- Continue moving through the drill and throwing simulated passes for the remainder of 30 seconds.
Sets/Duration: 1-4×30 sec.
