What Could Microsoft’s ‘XboxAB’ Be?
In the weeks leading up to E3, the focus on Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo is getting more intense, and every little move made by the gaming giants is being examined. Last week, NeoGAF spotted a pair of newly registered Microsoft domain names: www.xboxab.com and www.xboxab.net. What could XboxAB possibly refer to? Two dominant theories are running around the Internet.
1 – A Virtual Reality Headset
Last month, Microsoft revealed plans to release a virtual reality headset. The company was initially believed to be behind Sony and its Project Morpheus, but due to the recent acquisition of certain patents from Osterhout Design Group, MS may be more prepared than previously thought. Many who believe this theory suggest “AB” stands for “augmented body.”
Interestingly, during a recent interview with Fortune, Xbox boss Phil Spencer had this to say about VR: “Virtual Reality is a really interesting area, especially for games, and while it seems like it’s been ‘just over horizon’ for the last 20 years or so, I think we could finally start seeing it prove out soon for both gamers and developers.”
2 – A new game
In the same Fortune interview, Spencer emphasized that Microsoft would focus on games at the upcoming E3 Expo. “Exclusive games will continue to play a major role for Xbox in the new console generation, just as they have in previous generations. This E3 is important for us to show gamers our future plans for exclusives and third-party support.
“Right now I think we have a strong lineup of in-development exclusives, including games like Sunset Overdrive, Project Shark, Quantum Break and Halo, in addition to some exciting titles you will hear more about at E3. It’s going to be great at E3 to be able to share the games coming exclusively to Xbox One, and it’s only going to get better.”
Asked by IGN about the domain names, an MS spokesperson replied, “[Microsoft] often acquires various domain names as part of its ongoing business strategy, but beyond that, we have no comment.”
E3 2014 will take place in Los Angeles from June 10 – 12.
