Brad Pitt Is Developing ‘Illuminae’ Adaptation
Brad Pitt is joining forces with Warner Bros. to develop a big screen adaptation of the new bestselling sci-fi novel Illuminae, by award-winning authors Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. Pitt is producing via his company Plan B Entertainment. The highly acclaimed book, released last month, has generated lots of buzz for its fresh, original approach to the genre. It’s the first installment of a planned trilogy.
In an interview authors Kristoff and Kaufman did with Entertainment Weekly earlier this year, Kaufman offered this intriguing description of the story: “Illuminae is like Battlestar Galactica meets Ten Things I Hate About You. It’s got explosions, surprise attacks, a deadly plague, a mad artificial intelligence, conspiracies, a desperate fight for survival, and also kissing.”
One of the most interesting and unusual things about the movie, set in 2575, is a story told through a dossier containing found documents, instant messages, texts, ship schematics, classified files and casualty lists. The book revolves around a teenage hacker and her fighter pilot ex-boyfriend. While some attention is paid to their broken relationship, the bigger story is the couple’s attempt to uncover a conspiracy that surrounds an intergalactic war. The duo must deal with an enemy race, rogue and artificial intelligence and a deadly virus.
This isn’t the only high-profile project being adapted from Kaufman’s work. The acclaimed author also co-wrote the Starbound Trilogy, in the works at MGM Television. Kristoff is best known for writing another bestselling fantasy series, Lotus War.
Plan B showed interest in Illuminae early on, which isn’t surprising since the company has a reputation for unique and offbeat material. As for Brad Pitt’s on-screen career, he can currently be seen starring with his wife Angelina Jolie in the drama By the Sea.
