Rap News Rundown: 2 Chainz, Lil Wayne, Kanye West and Tyler, the Creator
This past week, video nearly killed a rap star’s reputation, Lil Wayne talked retirement once again, Kanye West told us how lucky we are to have Kanye West, and Tyler, the Creator was dissed by a long-forgotten rapper.
2 Chainz’s Cali Visit Ends With Robbery & Arrest
2 Chainz was all over the headlines last week. Last Sunday, he was robbed at gunpoint in San Francisco and relieved of at least one cell phone and his wallet. The Atlanta-based rapper initially claimed it didn’t happen, but a video of the incident surfaced online shortly thereafter. The clip shows two assailants approaching the rapper’s group. He attempted to get away by running, but fell and was caught by one of the gunmen.
To make matters worse, last Tuesday, before he was able to leave Cali behind, he was arrested at LAX when TSA officials discovered drugs in his checked luggage. Cops booked him for less than an ounce of marijuana and possession of the controlled substance promethazine with codeine, a drug used to create sizzurp.
In other news, the “Dope Peddler” MC recently announced plans to release his sophomore solo effort, Based on True Story II on Sept. 10.
Lil Wayne Reaffirms Plans to Retire
During his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live last week, Lil Wayne confirmed that he is still aiming to walk away from the mic following the release of Tha Carter series’ fifth installment.
“I want to retire after Tha Carter V, which I hope would be my last album,” said Weezy. He isn’t sure when the project will hit shelves, however, telling the host that he has a few other albums to work on in the immediate future, including one with Birdman.
As for what he’ll tackle after retiring, the hitmaker said, “Everything that I’ve never had a chance to do…Things like spend quality time with my kids.”
DJ Drama also recently announced that he will be linking back up with Lil Wayne soon to release Dedication 5.
Is Kanye West the Second Coming of Steve Jobs?
During an interview with the New York Times, Kanye took the time to explain the importance of his presence in the world. Comparing himself to late tech visionary Steve Jobs, the rapper boasted about having his hand in “the most culturally important albums of the past four years.”
“I think what Kanye West is going to mean is something similar to what Steve Jobs means,” said West. “I am undoubtedly, you know, Steve of Internet, downtown, fashion, culture. Period. By a long jump. I honestly feel that because Steve has passed, you know. It’s like when Biggie passed and Jay-Z was allowed to become Jay-Z.”
In other news, West and girlfriend Kim Kardashian welcomed their baby girl into the world over the weekend. The first-time parents had the child at Cedar-Sinai Hospital in L.A.
Tyler, the Creator Reacts to J-Kwon Diss Record
By far the weirdest thing to happen last week: rapper J-Kwon returned from one-hit wonder oblivion to release a diss song targeted at Odd Future leader Tyler, the Creator and GOOD Music’s Pusha T. The record is thought to be in response to jabs the two have taken at the St. Louis rapper in songs “Rella” and “Only You Can Tell It.” And it comes just as Kanye West pointed out the performer’s lone hit “Tipsy” as one of his favorites.
Tyler seemed amused by the track. “Do y’all remember J-Kwon? Prolly not. But anyway he made a diss song towards Odd Future and I am so…stoked,” wrote the MC on Twitter.
