Alicia Vikander Joins Tom Hanks for Thriller ‘The Circle’
Alicia Vikander (Ex-Machina) will star with Tom Hanks in the big screen tech thriller The Circle. The career of this beautiful Swedish actress, whose big break came with 2012’s Oscar-nominated film A Royal Affair, is definitely on the rise. She has half a dozen high-profile films in the works.
Hanks will also produce the movie with Gary Goetzman via their company Playtone, which has been behind such prominent titles as The Polar Express and My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
Based on the 2013 novel by Dave Eggers, The Circle revolves around recent college graduate, Mae Holland (Vikander), who lands her dream job at a powerful Internet company called The Circle. Hanks plays the charismatic co-owner of the company, who becomes involved with Mae.
Eggers’ suspenseful big brother-esque novel chronicles how the ambitious young woman gradually loses sight of family, friends and her own identity as she becomes more immersed in her unusual workplace. Eventually, she agrees to give up her privacy entirely so the public can observe and comment on her every move.
James Ponsoldt, best known for directing The Spectacular Now, will direct The Circle from his own screenplay.
Vikander will soon be seen in Guy Ritchie’s action adventure comedy The Man from U.N.C.L.E, starring Henry Cavill, due out Aug. 14. Hanks is as busy as ever, starring in at least five more movies by the end of 2016, including the much anticipated Steven Spielberg Cold War thriller Bridge of Spies, in theaters Oct. 16.
