Fox Plans ‘Alien Nation’ Remake
20th Century Fox is developing a modern remake of the 1988 sci-fi movie Alien Nation. The project will have a new screenplay by Iron Man writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway.
The original film, set in 1991 Los Angeles and starring Mandy Patinkin and James Caan, featured a society in which humans grudgingly co-exist with aliens who have arrived on Earth. For a number of years the aliens, who arouse suspicion because of their strange habits, are separated from the human population into a segregated colony, and they don’t have the same rights. As the so-called Newcomers are gradually integrated into human society, the first-ever alien police officer, Francisco (Patinkin), partners with veteran human cop Sykes (Caan). While working on a tough case together, the two detectives manage to overcome their differences and become friends.
The movie launched a franchise that included a TV spin-off, books, made-for-TV movies and comic books.
Specifics are not yet available, but the studio plans to reimagine the property like they did for their hugely successful Planet of the Apes franchise.
