The story begins in a city of hard knocks—Detroit—where the All-Pro tight end was born and raised. From an early age, Gates knew that in order to succeed, he had to rise above the squalid street life that trapped so many of his peers. So he focused his eyes on the prize: going to college on scholarship and working his way toward becoming a professional athlete. There would be many twists and turns along the way.
