Few college football rivalries are steeped in as much tradition as the annual Army-Navy game. The two service academies face off on Saturday, and Nike is giving both programs the full Pro Combat treatment.
Army’s uniforms are meant to evoke memories of 1944, when the football team was a dominant force in college football, going undefeated and winning a national championship—one of three in a row. But the team’s on-field performance was overshadowed by the U.S. Army’s performance on the battlefield, with its key World War II victory in the Battle of the Bulge. So it made sense for Nike to include a detailed battle map across all facets of the Cadets’ black and gold uniforms.
Nike’s football uniforms for the Midshipmen are designed to replicate the look of a traditional Navy uniform. They feature a new font for the numbers; “NAVY” in block letters on the front of the jersey; and a helmet reminiscent of a Naval officer’s cover. Notice the gold braid around the outside of the new design. But the coolest part of Navy’s new look has to be the base layer. The iconic phrase “Don’t Tread on Me” is featured on the front with red and white stripes.
