WATCH: Gearbox’s Newest Shooter, ‘Battleborn’
Gearbox has announced plans to release Battleborn, a multiplayer shooter for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. Check out the debut trailer below.
The action takes place in the future, when a new breed of warriors is the only hope for saving the last star in a dying universe. They have to band together to stop “an unstoppable menace,” and gamers help by choosing from the heroes and fighting alongside their friends on co-op missions or against them in multiplayer matches.
“If Borderlands 2 is a shooter-looter, Battleborn is a hero-shooter. As a genre-fused, hobby-grade, co-operative and competitive FPS exploding with eye-popping style and an imaginative universe, Battleborn is the most ambitious video game that Gearbox has ever created,” said Randy Pitchford, Gearbox president in a statement.
The developer has shied away from categorizing the title as a multiplayer online battle (MOBA) game, however.
“Some parts of Battleborn will look like some parts of MOBAs. It’ll also have some parts of classic shooters, and a roster of playable characters more akin to classic fighting games. You’ll also probably recognize influences from Borderlands. This is why we describe Battleborn as a fusion of genres, and it’s why we affectionately call it a hero-shooter,” creative director Randy Varnell wrote on the official Gearbox forum. “As convenient as categories can be, I believe we can understand Battleborn without having to put it in a category.”
While replying to fans on Twitter, Pitchford acknowledged the big task ahead of Gearbox, but pointed out their successful track record. “Always the case when you pave new ground. Everyone said the same thing about both Brothers in Arms and Borderlands,” he wrote.
2K Games will publish the title. Battleborn is expected to land on shelves in mid-2016.
