Means’ baseball journey isn’t close to the standard MLB player, but all of his hard work and determination brought him to one of the greatest pitching performances in Orioles History.
In 2016, Means was serving as a substitute teacher in De Soto, Kansas to help pay rent. Means wasn’t recruited by a division-1 program in college, was drafted out of high school in 2011, got hurt, and didn’t end up making it to the pros until 2015.
John Means created a LinkedIn profile several years ago to job hunt, ready to give up baseball.

“I can’t even put it into words right now. I felt ok all game, didn’t really have a changeup until the end, but glad I got it going,” Means told MASN after the game.
