With less than two weeks to go before the release of one of the most anticipated video games of the year, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, gamers are making plans to attend the midnight launch. They may be waiting in line with NFL Pro Bowlers, such as WR Brandon Lloyd, recently acquired by the St. Louis Rams.
Lloyd is a serious gamer. A room in his house is dedicated to gaming, equipped with a PS3 and XBox 360 console attached to a 60-inch LED TV. And like scores of other NFL players, he’s hooked on Call of Duty. He’s been playing it since the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare came out in 2007. “Every team I’ve been on,” he says, “we’ve had a huge following. That game, it brings people together. I still have guys I play [COD] with who are out of the league.”
Just like the rest of us, Lloyd, who led the NFL in receiving yards last season (1,448), is counting down to Nov. 8. He says, “I’ll get home from practice, go to bed and set my alarm for 11:45 p.m.” Then he’ll head out to pick up his copy.
Until he was traded by the Denver Broncos, Lloyd was a part of a large group of players who played COD on a regular basis, including RB Knowshon Moreno and DE Jarvis Moss. “We’d rush home and play until late,” says Lloyd, “but only after a Free-for-All match to see who had the hot hand.”
Lloyd still plays with guys he met during his stint with the Redskins. And although he doesn’t pretend to have the world’s best K/D ratio, the game is in his blood.
