Breanna Stewart named one of SI’s Sportsperson of 2020
As if the trophy case couldn’t get bigger, Breanna Stewart adds another accomplishment to what is arguably one of the best professional women’s sports careers ever. Stewart was named one of five Sports Illustrated’s 2020 Sportsperson of the year. Two-time WNBA champion, WNBA MVP and ROY, four-time NCAA champion, and three-time college player of the year are just a few accolades behind Stewart. But this Sportsperson award is more than what Stewart brings on the court.

Stewart made it hard for SI not to throw her name in the hat after winning the 2020 WNBA title and finals MVP. The article says the balance between Stewart’s resilience coming back from an Achilles injury in 2019 and her fight for social and racial justice was extremely noticeable. It was almost as if Stewart was more passionate about speaking up on these topics than putting on a jersey and playing in the WNBA. But that’s what makes Stewart unique and most deserving of this award.
Megan Rapinoe, USA women’s soccer icon, says in the SI article that Stewart is a model for women’s sports and what impact she can make off the court. “We not only have to be excellent at our sport, but we also have to then convince people that we are excellent and that they should watch. We have to fight for social justice, not just this year, but all the time,” Rapinoe writes.
Stewart is currently overseas playing in the EuroLeagueWomen for the UMMC Ekaterinburg.
