Brittney Griner Wants to Play DeMarcus Cousins One-On-One
One of the coolest things about the Olympics is that athletes from various sports intermingle and spend time with each other, like they were all freshmen at a college dorm. This has been especially true for Team USA at the 2016 Summer Olympics, where the men’s basketball team has spent time watching swimmers like Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky, and the women’s basketball team has spent time talking smack to the men.
Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner has taken aim at one men’s player in particular: DeMarcus Cousins. During their time in Rio, the two have become close friends, to the point where Griner is prepared to take on the Sacramento Kings star in a game of one-on-one.
“I would love to just go out there and play against [Cousins],” Griner told USA Today. “We talk a lot of crap to each other. I love talking to him. He’s really funny. I would love to just go out there and play against him.”
Griner, who stands 6-foot-8, is averaging 13.5 points and 6.1 rebounds through 24 games of the 2016 WNBA season, and she’s one of the few women in the league who can throw down a dunk. Cousins beats Griner in both height (6-foot-11) and weight (270 pounds to 200 pounds), and he would be a load for Griner to handle in the post. But then again, Griner might have more nimbleness on her side.
“As soon as I walk in the door, she’s at me,” Cousins said. “She says I’m a bum. She says she’ll kick my butt. It’s all in fun.”
But would Cousins go as far as to say Griner would have a chance against him? Nah.
“She’s got some footwork, but I’m top dog,” Cousins said. “I told her she’s the third-best post player here behind me and DJ [DeAndre Jordan]. She’s a little mad about that.”
