Cardale Jones’s NFL Combine Ends Prematurely After He Pulls His Hamstring Running the 40-Yard Dash
Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones got off to a great start at the NFL Scouting Combine by posting an official 4.81-second 40-Yard Dash. For a guy who is 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, this was an impressive run that was sure to catch the eyes of coaches and scouts.

Unfortunately, Jones’s day was cut short by injury.
On his second 40-Yard Dash attempt, Jones came up lame a few yards short of the finish line, which is the telltale sign of a hamstring injury. Even still, he posted an unofficial time of 4.85 seconds.

During the sprinting stride, the hamstrings decelerate the lower leg as it swings from back to front. This causes the hamstrings to maximally contract, which can cause an injury if the muscle isn’t prepared.
While training for the 40-Yard Dash, there’s little doubt that Jones’s strength coaches went to great lengths to prepare his hamstrings to handle the 40, while limiting stress on this oft-injured muscle group. However, Jones was likely pushing harder during the Combine to shave critical seconds off his run, and his hamstring gave out.

Assuming his injury isn’t severe, Jones will have to wait for Ohio State’s Pro Day on March 11th to perform other drills that coaches are anxious to witness.
