Chicago White Sox Slugger Adam Eaton Hit a Grand Slam While Blowing a Big Ol’ Bubble of Chewing Gum
“Hitting a round object with another round object as it is moving is the hardest thing to do in all of sports.”
Ted Williams, arguably the greatest hitter in Major League Baseball history, said this—a simple statement that expertly sums up the impossibility of hitting a baseball. It’s a total guessing game for a batter: what pitch will be thrown; the speed of the ball as it reaches the plate; and where the pitch will land, in or out of the strike zone. Even if you make contact, where the baseball goes can be completely out of your control.
All of that is why what Chicago White Sox outfielder Adam Eaton did in the top of the ninth inning against the Cleveland Indians last night was so impressive. Not only did he rocket a grand slam against Cody Allen, the excellent Indians closer, to take the Sox from a 7-6 deficit to a 10-7 lead they would not relinquish, he did it while blowing a big ol’ bubble of chewing gum.

After the game, Eaton said he was totally unaware of his bubble-blowing in the heat of the moment.
“I heard that,” Eaton told mlb.com of his feat. “I didn’t know that. I think I was so flustered about my swing before, I was just trying to make contact, not to look really stupid, and apparently I blew a bubble. I’m all right with that.”

Still, the focus required to hit an Allen sinker and blow a bubble at the same time is pretty amazing. Eaton should attempt to do it during every at-bat from now on.
“Sometimes you do some things you’re not thinking about, and mine must be blowing a bubble, so we’ll take it.”
