After a rough start—he gave up two runs in the first inning—the Rays’ righthander struck out 12 batters in five innings, a Tampa Bay team record for strikeouts on opening day. The previous record was set by Steve Trachsel, who recorded seven strikeouts in 2000, and tied by David Price in 2011.

Archer is the fourth pitcher in the Wild Card Era to fan a dozen batters on opening day. The last player to do so was Oakland’s Felix Hernandez in 2007.
