Deron Williams Considers an MMA Career ‘Realistic’ After He Retires From the NBA
Deron Williams is in the twilight of his NBA career.
The 32-year-old point guard is on a one-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks, where he’s currently averaging a career low in minutes. Also, he’s been notoriously injury-prone throughout his career, so it’s not hard to imagine that he’ll be hanging ’em up fairly soon.
However, Williams has some big plans after the NBA—he’d like to become an MMA fighter.
Williams adores mixed martial arts. When he returned to Dallas in 2015, he met a local MMA coach named Sayif Saud. Williams began training with Saud as a way to stay in shape for basketball. Eventually, the two decided to open a state-of-the-art MMA training facility called Fortis MMA.
“[MMA training helps me] control my body better,” Williams told the Dallas News. “I can hit the bag with very little movement and do some light rolling and get a great workout and learn and drill. That’s what I love about it. My body has taken a pounding from running on the court.”
Williams is absolutely enamored with combat sports, and he claims to watch every single UFC fight. He says that Saud would like to see him dive into cage fighting after his NBA career concludes, but Williams thinks he’ll start with jiu-jitsu.
“I think it would be realistic [to compete in MMA],” Williams said. “[My coach] wants me to fight [in the cage]. I don’t know about that. I will do some jiu-jitsu grappling tournaments.”
Most guys turn to the golf course when they retire, but whatever floats your boat.
