Dwayne Johnson to Star in Action Flick ‘Skyscraper,’ Set in China
Dwayne Johnson is reteaming with his San Andreas producer, Beau Flynn, for the China-set action flick Skyscraper. There is so much enthusiasm surrounding this project, it set off a bidding war involving four major studios. Legendary eventually won the rights to this movie, which takes place inside a massive Chinese skyscraper.
Johnson is set to star in and co-produce the picture via his banner, Seven Bucks Productions. The plotline is being kept carefully under wraps, but the venue offers a strong clue. Tall urban structures have been the settings for some of the most iconic movies in history, particularly disaster films. According to The Hollywood Reporter, we can expect the movie “to have shades of Die Hard, the classic Bruce Willis action movie set in an office building, as well as Towering Inferno, the 1974 disaster movie that starred Paul Newman and Steve McQueen and featured a gargantuan office building engulfed in flames.”
Writing and directing the high profile actioner is Rawson Marshall Thurber, who is best known for directing the 2013 hit comedy We’re the Millers. More recently he directed Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart in the big screen crime comedy Central Intelligence, in theaters June 17. Thurber will also produce Skyscraper, alongside Johnson and Flynn.
A release date for Skyscraper has not yet been announced, but fans will have plenty of chances to see Dwayne Johnson on the big screen over the next few years. The actor is in high demand, with 11 films premiering in theaters, including highly anticipated sequels Fast 8, San Andreas 2 and Journey 3, as well as reboots of Jumanji and Baywatch.
