Since the emergence of five-finger shoes into the mainstream of pop culture, the fashion world has tried to make sense of the phenomenon. Many are asking the question: are five-finger shoes fashionable?
No matter where you wear them, or in what company, the form-fitting, minimalist shoes become an instant topic of conversation. Now that celebrities are sporting them, it appears the mainstream is slowly accepting the new fashion trend. Shailene Woodley, the young star of The Descendants, abandoned her high heels and slipped into a pair of black Vibram five-finger shoes for a Golden Globes after-party. Both Danny Glover and Scarlet Johansson wear the shoes, swearing they are not only stylish, but great for posture.
If celebrity sightings alone do not convince you that five-finger shoes are fashionable, take a look at their sales numbers. In the UK alone, according to the Telegraph, sales doubled from 20,000 pairs in sold 2011 to 40,000 pairs in 2012. Such dramatic growth would seem to indicate mainstream acceptance and pop culture approval.
