You just finished your fantasy football draft, but for whatever reason you’re unhappy with your roster. Maybe you had brain-freeze during the draft and made poor selections. Or, if you drafted early in the pre-season, perhaps your stud running back was injured during training camp or a pre-season game, and now you’re left scrambling to fix your team before the first kickoff.
Regardless of the reason, Yahoo! Fantasy Football expert Brandon Funston has some tips to help you get your team in shape before the games begin.

“You have to identify the problem area and you have to assess how bad things are,” Funston said. “If they are bad, you have to get rid of your luxury items to start trying to attack that problem area.”
Your “luxury items” might be a backup quarterback or a backup tight end, or perhaps a second defense you wanted to hold onto for a key matchup three weeks from now. You may have drafted Miami QB Ryan Tannehill, expecting him to emerge as a sleeper and lead your team to late-season victories. But if he’s your backup, you might need to let him go to shore up those weak spots in your lineup.
“Maybe you can package your backup quarterback with one of your other players to get an upgrade at running back,” Funston says, reminding us that we have to give up something to get something.
The Waiver Wire
“The first few weeks of the season are when you’re going to get luckiest on the waiver wire,” Funston says. “That’s when you’re going to get a bunch of guys who were overlooked [during the draft], who are going to be season-long, helpful players.”
Who could you get? Funston compiled this lineup of players who went undrafted in most leagues last year:
- QB: Nick Foles — 27 TDs, 2 interceptions
- RB: Knowshon Moreno — 1,000 rushing yards, 10 TDs; 540 receiving yards, 3 TDs
- RB: Zac Stacy — 970 rushing yards, 7 TDs; 1 receiving TD
- WR: Julian Edelman — 1,000 yards, 6 TDs
- WR: Keenan Allen — 1,000 yards, 8 TDs
- TE: Julius Thomas — 780 yards, 12 TDs
Funston says, “Getting into that waiver wire early and being active is going to be a key part of [improving your team.]”
Gamble
What if there’s no obvious help in the pool of available players on the wire?
“Look for lottery tickets,” Funston says. “Look at Knile Davis backing up Jamaal Charles, Christine Michael backing up Marshawn Lynch or even Chris Polk backing up LeSean McCoy. Those guys are often undrafted and they’re one ankle tweak or knee injury away from being major players in fantasy.”
