Free Agent RB Danny Woodhead Is Running and Cutting Just Four Months After ACL Surgery
Danny Woodhead, the soon-to-be 32-year-old free agent running back, tore his ACL in the second game of the 2016 NFL season. He was lost for the season as the San Diego Chargers toiled through a 5-11 season, then announced the franchise would be moving from San Diego to Los Angeles during the off-season.
Returning from an ACL tear, especially at Woodhead’s age, can be a grueling process, taking anywhere between 6 and 8 months before the athlete is able to start running and making legitimate cuts out on the field again. But Woodhead has taken the typical recovery timetable and turned it on its head.

Just four months after surgery, Woodhead was spotted working on his agility, running at close to full speed while making cuts and zig-zagging across the football field. According to Chargers beat writer Michael Gehlken, Woodhead is six months ahead of his recovery schedule, and it shows. Woodhead now fully expects to be ready for the start of training camp in July, a minor miracle considering how recently he underwent surgery.
Teams looking to sign Woodhead this off-season will still have to be wary of a running back on the other side of 30 coming off major knee surgery, but witnessing Woodhead’s rapid recovery is certainly impressive.
