‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Sequel Confirmed; Coming in 2017
We’ve barely gotten a look at Marvel’s first Guardians of the Galaxy film, and already plans have been announced for a sequel.
Director James Gunn revealed the news last week on Twitter: “Yes, I’m writing and directing the sequel to [Guardians of the Galaxy] for theaters July 28 2017. But first, go see the first one, out next week!”
The audience at Marvel’s San Diego ComicCon panel also got the news at the end of their session via a short clip of Gunn and actor Chris Pratt joking about how upset the studio would be if they leaked the sequel’s release date.
The news isn’t entirely surprising. Initial reviews of the first movie have been positive, and Gunn’s co-writer Nicole Perlman told TheWrap, “They started to figure it out pretty quick when they started getting the reactions from the audience; it was a very positive reaction. Of course they would want to make a sequel. As long as it does well and people are excited about it, they’ll wanna do a sequel. So, it’s going to happen.”
During an interview with the Wall Street Journal‘s Speakeasy column, Gunn revealed he already has some thoughts on where the next adventure will lead the team. “I have a good idea,” the director said. “Frankly, it’s more important that the story works by itself than how it fits into The Avengers. First and foremost, I’m concerned with the Marvel cosmic side of things and these characters.”
