Rap News Rundown: Gucci Mane, Jay Z, Tyler the Creator
Last week, Gucci Mane went from facing over two decades in prison to a sentence of a little over two years; footage leaked of Jay Z being attacked by his sister-in-law; and Tyler the Creator called into question Iggy Azalea’s body odor and accused her on live television of having butt implants.
Gucci Mane Will Remain in Jail Until 2016; Writing Autobiography
Gucci Mane reached a plea deal with prosecutors last week in connection with his September 2013 arrest and subsequent drug possession and firearm charges. As a part of the agreement, he pleaded guilty to a federal firearms charge in exchange for 39 months in jail with credit for 10 months already served. He will return to court in July to be officially sentenced. The Atlanta performer was facing a 20-year prison sentence in addition to a $500,000 fine.
Gucci isn’t letting his present incarceration slow him down. A message on his official Twitter account announced the forthcoming release of his autobiography. “I’m writing a novel about my life, The Diary of a Trap God,” reads the message. He will also apparently launch The Guwop Tour! in 2015.
Jay Z Involved in Altercation with Solange; Statement Released
Jay Z and his sister-in-law Solange were involved in an altercation earlier this month at a Met Gala afterparty. Footage of Solange attempting to assault the rapper while being restrained by a security guard inside an elevator went viral last week. The two, along with Beyonce, who was also in the elevator at the time, have since released a statement referring to the incident as a “private matter” and refuting rumors that Solange was intoxicated.
“[Jay Z and Solange] both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologized to each other, and we have moved forward as a united family,” reads the statement.
The popular rumor is that the fight was prompted by Rachel Roy, the ex-wife of Jay’s former business partner Dame Dash, flirting with the rapper. Beyonce reportedly confronted Roy, and the situation escalated after Jay expressed interest in going to Rihanna’s Met Gala afterparty alone.
Tyler the Creator Disses Iggy Azalea; Rapper Responds
Tyler the Creator has never been known to withhold his opinion. During a recent visit to BET’s 106 & Park to promote the new season of Loiter Squad, Tyler and the rest of the Odd Future crew were asked to choose who they would marry, kiss and diss between M.I.A., Rita Ora and Iggy Azalea. Tyler responded, “I don’t want Iggy, she stink. She got shots in her thump–I want a real booty. You feel me?”
Iggy responded via Twitter, writing, “Tyler the Creator is beyond immature. I’ve always believed you had something more to offer the world. Shame to see you be so rude.”
Tyler then did something he rarely ever does—he apologized. “Iggy I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings,” he tweeted.
