Heading down a new path, the popular HBO series 24/7 takes on professional hockey in its upcoming series, Penguins/Capitals: Road to the NHL Winter Classic. The producers of 24/7, who have done a nice job behind the scenes of boxing’s biggest matches and the NASCAR circuit, will now focus their attention on the budding rivalry between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals.
The synopsis on HBO’s website states, “On one side stands an outsized and famously raucous star from Russia, and on the other, a young but spectacular leader adopted by the Steel City. The rivalry between the Washington Capitals’ Alexander Ovechkin and the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Sidney Crosby, along with the differing personalities of head coaches Bruce Boudreau and Dan Bylsma, sets the stage for an all-out battle when the two teams meet outdoors on Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field—the culminating moment of 24/7 Penguins/Capitals:  Road to the NHL Winter Classic.”

24/7 Penguins/Capitals: Road to the NHL Winter Classic premieres on Dec. 15 at 10 p.m. EST on HBO. A total of four episodes will air, with three capturing the lead-up to the Winter Classic, including a Dec. 23 game in D.C. The final episode, featuring the Classic itself, will air Jan. 5, 2011.
