Jake Gyllenhaal Headlines ‘Wildlife’
Jake Gyllenhaal and Carey Mulligan are about to share the screen for the first time, starring opposite each other in the feature film adaptation of Richard Ford’s novel Wildlife. The story follows a young boy who watches his parents’ marriage collapse after his mother becomes involved with another man.
While the basic premise is not unusual, the fact that it’s told from the perspective of the child adds a compelling spin, which opens the door to many interesting possibilities.
Actor Paul Dano (Cowboys & Aliens) is making his screenwriting and directorial debut with this film, which he is also producing. The script was co-written by the movie’s executive producer, Zoe Kazan. Best known as an actress, Kazan comes from an impressive show business family. Her grandfather was the legendary and controversial filmmaker, Elia Kazan.
Dano is fortunate to have such acclaimed and high profile actors starring in his first feature; and he seemed very enthusiastic about the project, saying, “In Richard’s book I saw myself and many others. I have always wanted to make films—and have always known I would make films about family. I couldn’t be happier to have such beautiful collaborators like Carey and Jake leading the way.”
This is one of at least four films that the much in-demand Jake Gyllenhaal has coming out next year, including the space travel thriller Life, debuting May 26. Gyllenhaal will next be seen co-starring with Amy Adams in the psychological thriller Nocturnal Animals, in theaters December 9. Carey Mulligan just completed work on the World War II drama Mudbound, co-starring Garrett Hedlund, premiering some time next year.
