Jamal Shead Goes Viral For Picking Up Angry Teammate’s Trash
It doesn’t matter if you win or lose or if a bad call is made. A player must always maintain composure and sportsmanlike conduct. Jamal Shead showed that he’s a great player and a class act.
It all started with a controversial goaltending call that gave an 83-82 loss to the University of Houston. Then, the temper tantrums like infants began to fly when the assistant coach Kellan Sampson kicked over a chair twice. Then, as he stomped off to the locker room, Reggie Chaney followed with an even more horrific display of poor sportsmanship by pushing over a trash can- spilling trash onto the floor. You would think a senior forward would have an ounce of respect.

It takes just one to change a teams culture for the better. pic.twitter.com/WxqcFWZfhc
As many players left the court, they all stepped over the trash. However, there was one thread of hope and decency keeping the University of Houston in standing grace. Jamal Shead was the only player who stopped to pick up the trash instead of walking over it. Fans were so amazed by his action, that they recorded it. And, within minutes became a huge hit on social media. Jamal and his deed deserve as much recognition as it can get. It is refreshing and heartwarming to see an incredible act of sportsmanship and respect in an athlete. Something you really don’t see much of anymore.
A big part of playing sports is controlling your emotions and professionally conducting yourself on the court or field. The coaching staff is supposed to be exemplary and teach this to their players. So, it seems there is a failure to communicate. However, the coaches are responsible for the players’ attitudes and behaviors. Therefore, the coaches need to be held accountable and help players control themselves appropriately.
If the coach and the players really had respect and responsibility, they would have helped Jamal clean up. But it wasn’t till afterward when Jamal’s good deeds began to shine and spread like wildfire on social media. Thereafter, his teammates and the assistant coach apologized on their social media accounts. But if it weren’t for Jamal’s good deed, they probably would have never apologized if it wasn’t in the spotlight.
Things happen for a reason and sports show your true colors. These players must learn how to control their emotions and have better sportsmanship, no matter the calls on the court by the refs. They need to understand that this situation will not be the only one and time it will happen. Players have to be role models and show leadership in the spotlight for younger athletes to follow. Younger athletes take on and mimic attitudes and behaviors from high-level athletes in sport.
I can honestly say I’m proud and thankful for social media to show us that decency still exists. What a class act on and off the court.
