Rap News Rundown: Jay-Z, Gucci Mane and Lil Durk
Last week, Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Sports continued to make impressive moves, Gucci Mane spoke about the possibility of again joining forces with Waka Flocka Flame and the law caught up with Lil Durk.
Roc Nation Sports Close to Signing Kevin Durant
Durant could follow in the footsteps of New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith and WNBA guard Skylar Diggins by signing with Jay-Z’s sports agency, according to a report from ESPN. Though the company has not officially confirmed the news, the NBA star has reportedly spread the word among those in his inner circle. Back in 2010, he signed an extension with the Thunder for $85 million through the 2015-2016 season, which means the agency will not immediately be responsible for negotiating terms of his NBA contract. Instead, Jay-Z’s company would focus on Durant’s sponsorships with brands like Nike, Sprint and Gatorade.
Gucci Hoping Waka Flocka Flame Reunion; Wants to Help Chief Keef
Gucci Mane is optimistic about a reunion with former collaborator Waka Flocka Flame. During an interview with XXL, the southern performer labeled the disagreement that led to their partnership breakup a “miscommunication.” It is unclear how Waka feels about a reunion; but he has gone on record claiming that he will work with Gucci again. Either way, it doesn’t seem like the break will prevent fans from hearing the two on a track together. Gucci recently revealed that Waka will be featured on the upcoming 1017 BrickSquad compilation album, Big Money Talk.
In other news, Big Gwop has attempted to impart some knowledge to new labelmate Chief Keef, who was recently arrested twice in two weeks. He hopes that the troubled youth will learn from him and smarten up.
Lil Durk Arrested For Weapons Possession
One Keef affiliate doesn’t appear to be heeding the Trap Star’s advice. Lil Durk (real name Durk D. Banks) was arrested last Wednesday after cops responded to a tip about a person with a weapon. The authorities identified Banks as the person in possession of a .40 caliber-pistol. He is currently being held on $100,000 bond, charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
The timing couldn’t have been worse. The rapper hasn’t even been out of jail a full year after being convicted of possession of a hand gun without serial numbers, and he was slated to complete parole at the end of July. It is unclear what effect the arrest will have, but it isn’t looking good for the Def Jam signee. His lawyer insists that he is innocent, claiming that Durk’s friend Clarence January confessed to the crime at the scene but was ignored by the police.
