The cast of the upcoming live-action fantasy film Jem and the Holograms has been announced.

Aubrey Peeples of TV’s Nashville will play the leading role of Jerrica Benton, whose alter ego is Jem. Her bandmates, the Holograms, will be played by Aurora Perrineau (Pretty Little Liars), Hayley Kiyoko (The Fosters), and Stefanie Scott (A.N.T. Farm) as Jem’s sister Kimber. Nathan Moore (Hellphone) will play the part of Zipper.

The franchise started with a Hasbro toy line and a cartoon in the 1980’s. The plot of this big-screen adaptation revolves around an orphaned teenager who becomes an online recording star. Although music is a big part of the movie, adventure and mystery also come into play as Jem and Kimber go on a scavenger hunt across L.A., desperately trying to unlock a message left by their father.

Jem is clearly being modernized and re-imagined for a new generation. One of the movie’s themes that is relevant to today’s teens and young adults is the importance of staying true to one’s self in the social media age. Producers are also taking a current approach by including fans in the creative process, accepting fan submissions for roles and displaying fan-made art on the internet.

The film is currently in production with award-winning director Jon M. Chu. Chu is known for directing G.I. Joe: Relation, as well as several music-related flicks, including two of the Step Up films. The screenplay was written by Ryan Landels, best known for the TV movie Collision Earth.
