New Giants Head Coach Joe Judge Reveals the Most Important Thing He Learned From Bill Belichick
The Joe Judge era is underway in New York.
Last week, the Giants named Judge the 19th head coach in franchise history.
Before landing the gig, the 38-year-old Judge spent eight seasons as a member of the New England Patriots coaching staff. He started out as an assistant special teams coach before being elevated to special teams coordinator in 2015. He held that role for the past five seasons, and in 2019 also took on duties as the Patriots’ wide receivers coach.
During his introductory press conference, Judge was asked what he’d learned from Bill Belichick. His answer was stellar:
First thought: Joe Judge is a #Giants Head Coach. That’s good, and that’s bad. He obviously won the press conference, and came off very well.
This, though, was the single best thing he said: pic.twitter.com/xSkLKnS1St

“What I learned from coach Belichick was real simple. Be flexible within your personnel. Don’t try to shove round pegs in square holes. Figure out what you have. Let them play to their strengths.
“Don’t sit in a meeting and tell me what you don’t have in a player. Don’t tell me they can’t do a certain thing. Tell me what they can do, and then we’ll figure out as coaches, because that’s our job, how we can use that. That’s our responsibility.
“Everybody has something they can do. How many cast-offs do you see around the league that end up on another team and everyone says, ‘Wow, how they’d get that out of him?’ Maybe they just weren’t closing their eyes to what they could do.”
Belichick’s become famous for the mantra, “Do Your Job,” but he’s excellent about making sure his players are equipped to do the jobs asked of them.
It’s a recipe that’s led Belichick’s Patriots to astronomical success, and one that any leader of any team would do well to keep in mind.
