Johnny Depp is set to star in and produce a movie described as a live action/animation hybrid, entitled Fortunately, the Milk. Based on the 2014 bestselling novel written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Skottie Young, it will feature animation by the innovative Australian visual effects studio Animal Logic, the company behind The Lego Movie. Twentieth Century Fox is negotiating to buy the project.

According to Empire, the plot centers on “a father caring for his young son and daughter while their mother is away on business. Discovering they’re out of milk one morning, he heads to the local shop but returns hours later with a fantastical tale involving time travel, pirates, aliens, a volcano god and a stegosaurus in a hot air balloon. Just your average shopping trip, then.”

Edgar Wright (The World’s End) will direct the feature. In addition to this project, he has signed on to direct the buzz-worthy Jon Hamm crime dramedy Baby Driver.

The screenplay was written by Bret McKenzie, who is known as one half of the musical comedy duo Flight of the Conchords. Considering that McKenzie won an Oscar for the music he composed for another family comedy, The Muppets, it wouldn’t be surprising if he also contributes a couple of songs to the film.

It has not yet been revealed whether Depp will play the role of the father or another interesting character, possibly Professor Steg.
