Kobe Bryant Fueled his Legendary 81-Point Performance with Pizza and Burgers
Ten years ago, on Jan. 22, 2006, Kobe Bryant went on a scoring rampage. He dropped 81 points on the hapless Toronto Raptors, including 55 in the second half, a performance that placed him second behind Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point barrage for the most points ever scored in a single NBA game. Bryant played 42 minutes in that game, hoisting up 46 shots to get to his historic point total. It was a Herculean effort that forced Bryant to expend an immense amount of energy. Now that we know what Bryant ate the previous night and before the game, it’s a miracle he found the stamina to do it.
Baxter Holmes, who covers the Los Angeles Lakers for ESPN, tweeted out an interesting tidbit about what Bryant consumed the night of Jan. 25. It’s not pretty.
The night before he scored 81, Kobe had a pepperoni pizza & a grape soda. Then before the game, he had a burger & fries. Kobe: “No joke.”

Not only did Bryant devour a full pizza and wash it down with grape soda the night before, he woke up the next day and said, “yeah, let me get into a burger and fries before I hit the court.” Can you image that collection of food slogging around in Bryant’s stomach as he shot the ball time and time again? Can you imagine how that must have felt? It’s almost unthinkable that he didn’t excuse himself during the third quarter to run to the bathroom.
Another story to add to the legend of Kobe Bryant. Don’t try this at home, kids.
