A documentary film titled Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck is currently in the works at HBO. This in-depth project has the distinction of being the first fully authorized doc about the iconic Nirvana singer/songwriter/guitarist who committed suicide in 1994 at the age of 27. After debuting on HBO in 2015, Universal will release the film in theaters internationally.

Not only is the grunge rocker’s family cooperating with Montage of Heck, but Cobain’s daughter, the 22-year-old visual and musical artist Frances Bean Cobain, is serving as an executive producer.

Producing and directing the flick is Oscar nominee Brett Morgen, who is best known for writing and directing the 2012 Rolling Stones documentary Crossfire Hurricane. Morgen was given unprecedented access to Cobain’s archives, which include such personal items as never-before-seen home movies, journals and artwork, as well as the musician’s demos and songbooks. The program is said to feature dozens of Nirvana songs, but one of the most exciting things about it is the fact that previously unheard tracks by Cobain will also be included.

In a press release, Morgen talked about the treasure trove of material he uncovered while working on the film, which he began eight years ago. “Like most people, when I started, I figured there would be limited amounts of fresh material to unearth,” he said. “However, once I stepped into Kurt’s archive, I discovered over 200 hours of unreleased music and audio, a vast array of art projects—oil paintings, sculptures—countless hours of never-before-seen home movies, and over 4,000 pages of writings that together help paint an intimate portrait of an artist who rarely revealed himself to the media.”
