Lil Wayne released his Dedication 5 mixtape over Labor Day weekend. The installment includes features from a number of today’s hottest artists, including The Weeknd, T.I., Chance the Rapper, Future and 2 Chainz. Also making appearances: YMCMB artists Gudda Gudda, Mack Maine, Birdman, Euro, Lil Chuckie and Jae Millz.
For the latest addition to the Dedication series, Weezy once again linked with DJ Drama, who talked about the project earlier this year, promising more freestyles and skits. “It’s mostly freestyles. That’s what Dedication is known for,” said the DJ. “We’re also gonna get the skits back. So we’ll definitely get some of that entertaining value of Wayne talking what he talks, like in Dedication 1, 2 and 3.”
A number of tracks are revisions of old hits, including Kendrick Lamar’s “Don’t Kill My Vibe,” Kanye West’s “New Slaves,” Drake’s “Started From the Bottom,” Ace Hood’s “Bugatti” and Rich Homie Quan’s “Type of Way.” But the mixtape also includes quite a few original tracks.
Before the release of Dedication 5, the Young Money leader, who was overlooked during the recent award season, vowed to put more effort into his music. “Noticed I wasn’t nominated nor involved [in the] MTV VMA’s nor [the] BET Awards,” mused the rapper on Twitter. “I apologize to my fans and I promise [to] work harder if it kills me.”
Reactions to the 29-track effort have been mixed. Listen for yourself.
