Celebrate the Start of the New NBA Season With This Fantastic Mascot Fail
To show you what not to do, each week STACK brings you a moment from the weight room or sports field gone horribly wrong.
Is there a better way to celebrate the start of the new NBA season than reliving one of the greatest mascot fails of all time? Probably, but we can’t think of it right now.
[youtube video=”f_VdySnHsJY” /]Although the Raptor of the Toronto Raptors will always be our favorite mascot, the Milwaukee Bucks’ Bango is not far behind. Bango is a courageous deer willing to do insane things for the approval of strangers—things like jumping backwards off a 20-foot ladder.
In this video, Bango is doing his schtick at a 2009 All-Star Weekend mascot event. (As a side note, up to now we were blissfully unaware that All-Star weekend included a “mascot event,” and we’ve since invested A LOT of time catching up on gems like this.)
In an attempt to impress his fellow mascots, Bango somehow finds his way to the top of the backboard without a ladder. Not satisfied to simply stand behind the backboard, however, he climbs onto the hoop just in time to take a direct shot to the sweet spot from an over-the-shoulder half-court shot flung by an orange bear.
Instead of taking it as a sign that he should maybe get down, Bango decides that the best course of action is to start dancing on the rim. As you might imagine, things do not go great.
The best thing about this video is this description from the Los Angeles Times: “No mascots were harmed in the making of this film (we hope).” Sorry Los Angeles Times, but you may have missed the furry deer writhing on the ground and limping away at the end of your video. Bango, in fact, required ACL surgery after this little stunt.
Don’t worry though. Bango doesn’t want you to feel sorry for him! He just wants a little appreciation. We appreciate you, Bango. And we can’t wait to see what you put yourself through this year to entertain us.
