‘Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’ Gets a Release Date
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be released on Sept. 1 for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3, and on Sept. 15 for PC via Steam.
Both the standard and Day 1 versions will sell for $60 for current consoles and $50 for older consoles. However, the Day 1 version will come with a physical map, and, via DLC, an Adam-Ska Special Weapon, Personal Ballistic Shield (silver), Cardboard Box (Wetland), Fatigues (Blue Urban Snake Costume), and Metal Gear Online XP Boost.
The collector’s edition will cost $100, but comes with a slew of physical content, including a collectible SteelBook, a half-scale replica of Snake’s bionic arm, a behind-the-scenes documentary and trailers on Blu-ray disc. Digitally, purchasers will receive a Weapon and Shield Pack, a “Venom Snake” emblem, Snake costumes and MGO items like a Metal Gear Rex Helmet, Golden AM MRS-4 and Golden Pistol.
Set in 1984 during the Cold War, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain finds Snake trekking through Africa and Afghanistan on a mission to exact revenge on those who decimated his team in the 2014 prologue, Ground Zeroes. Last year, it was announced that Kiefer Sutherland would take over the duties previously performed by David Hayter and portray Snake in the upcoming title. During a recent interview with IGN, creator Hideo Kojima said the character won’t be as vocal as he was in previous installments. “Snake is and always has been nothing more than an extension of the player. He’s your alter ego,” explained Kojima. “Therefore, I made a very conscious effort this time to bring Snake closer to the player’s perspective. As much as possible, Snake will act based on the player rather than doing things like making spontaneous comments or flirting with women.”
Kojima also said, “I always say ‘this will be my last ‘Metal Gear,’ but the games in the series that I’ve personally designed and produced—Metal Gear on MSX, MG2, MGS1, 2, 3, 4, Peace Walker and now MGSV—are what constitute a single ‘Metal Gear Saga.'” said Kojima. “With MGS V, I’m finally closing the loop on that saga. In that sense, this will be the final Metal Gear Solid. Even if the Metal Gear franchise continues, this is the last Metal Gear.”
