The University of Oklahoma and Nike unveiled a new set of alternate football uniforms on Tuesday afternoon, intended to occasionally supplement the classic look of the OU home and away uniforms. The new combinations are inspired by the Sooners’ storied football history and the heritage of the State of Oklahoma.
The new white helmets were designed by Nike to pay tribute to the era of Bud Wilkinson, a legendary OU coach whose Sooner teams won national championships in 1950, 1955 and 1956. The uniforms also feature “47 straight” stitched onto the inner neckline, in recognition of Wilkinson’s record college football winning streak. The new alternate look has been unofficially dubbed “The Rough Rider,” which was the nickname of Oklahoma squads in the 1890s.
A wood grain design is used throughout the new uniforms, and both OU and Nike are promoting the fresh look with the hashtag #BringTheWood. The uniforms include the latest innovations from Nike, such as shrink-wrap fit, meshed ventilation, stretch-woven fabrics and Chain Maille Mesh technology.
Oklahoma has long sported one of the most classic looks in college football, right up there with Penn State. OU head coach Bob Stoops said, “[the additional uniforms] will be a nice change and will be a positive in recruiting, with our players and with our fans.”
There is no official word yet on when the team will wear the new uniforms during the 2014 season.
