5 Made-for-TV Movies About Olympic Athletes
Incredible athletes with inspiring backstories performed at their ultimate peak during the 2012 Summer Olympics. Collectively and individually, Americans and Brits enthusiastically supported their athletes on the world stage. But does that mean made-for-TV movies about them will attract the same level of patronage? We will have to wait and see whether the public embraces the made-for-TV Olympic series, but according to MTV, five such films have already emerged.
The dynamic swimming duo—Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte—inspired the world with their brotherly competition. The jury’s out on whether Channing Tatum and Benjamin Walker can do the swimmers justice in a made-for-TV flick.
Then there’s Gabby Douglas, the first African-American gold medalist in the all-around and individual gymnastics competition. Can Camille Winbush of The Bernie Mac Show capture the artistry of the young, fun and sporty gymnast?
Let’s not forget diving prodigy Tom Daley. Daley’s gold medal journey was slowed by tragic setbacks, including the death of his father and his breakup with diving partner. Daley’s made-for-TV film will star Josh Hutcherson.
According to MTV, other athletes featured in made-for-TV movies include Marien Esparza and Lolo Jones.
Defying the odds, these athletes outperformed all their competitors in London. Their quest for Olympic gold involved hard work, determination, and perseverance in the face of adversity. Yet, as inspiring as their stories are, films about them might not even win bronze. Because they dramatize stories that are already well known to sports fans, made-for-TV movies about Olympic stars might not shine so bright.
