Oxford High School Football Player Charges Shooter to Protect Classmates
Tate Myre. Madisyn Baldwin. Hanna St. Julian.
Fear can be debilitating to anyone, even battle-hardened, war-scarred military Veterans, but acting despite fear gives rise to true courageous heroism. Mr. Tate Myre showcased this ultimate valor during a dreadful school shooting in Michigan at his Oxford High School.
Myre charged the active shooter to hopefully subdue the assailant while allowing his fellow classmates time to get to safety. However, in a most heart wrenching twist of fate, Myre suffered numerous gunshot wounds in his efforts to bring the shooter down. Myre did not survive his injuries.
Now, tens of thousands have signed a petition to rename the football field where he played for his school in his honor.
Before continuing though, it cannot be stated enough to remember the other two victims of that tragic day. Madisyn Baldwin and Hanna St. Julian also had their lives stripped from this realm that day. Their names along with Myre’s should always be said, always be remembered, rather than the monster that chose to open fire upon innocents.
Upstanding Character
Myre’s coaches strived to instill leadership values in their players, both on and off the field. They have said that Myre showcased these values of heart, determination, and example on the field as well as in the classroom.
Myre showcased great skill on the field, having just been named All-Region in both Tight End and Line Backer, a valuable two-way player, and showed great aptitude in the classroom with a 3.9 GPA.
Collegiate Goals
Myre greatly desired to play football at the collegiate level. He had his sights set on either Michigan State University, Grand Valley State University, Wayne State University, or Texas A&M University.
Days before the fateful events of November 30, 2021, Myre had agreed and participated in a recruiting trip to Toledo University as can be seen from his Tweet:
Had a great time at the Toledo game yesterday. Thank you @RickyCicconeUT @ToledoFB for the invite!@ReggieWynns @TheD_Zone pic.twitter.com/VIDhtHWGPG

With his junior year highlights pinned on his social media for various coaches to easily find and view them, his aptitude for pushing himself on and off the field, and his intelligence cemented in his scholarly attributes, Myre could have easily made himself a strong presence and force on any team that offered him a scholarship opportunity.
Michigan State University felt similarly for they announced here:
We would like to welcome Tate Myre as an honorary Spartan Dawg to our #Proce22Driven class 💚 #SD4L #OxfordStrong pic.twitter.com/QD64s0HKnP

Tate Myre would become an honorary signee of the Spartans football 2022 draft class calling him forever an “…honorary Spartan Dawg.”
The entire college football world, nay, the entire sports world at large, liked that class act that MSU proudly tendered upon the promising young man. The 300 Spartans of yesteryear can only yell their war chants for such a similar warrior in Myre. They would have gladly carried him back on his shield to his family in the wake of ultimate evil to allow his fellow classmates a chance to escape and survive.
Never Be Forgotten
Tate Myre.
Madisyn Baldwin.
Hanna St. Julian.
Never shall their names be forgotten. Never shall their names be understated.
