Train at a Whole New Level Using Pear Square One
Athletes’ efforts to become bigger, faster and stronger have blown up the market for products that measure intensity. But with so many devices monitoring heart rate, distance and calories burned, it can be difficult to determine the best fit.
Enter Pear Square One, a training kit that combines a heart rate monitor, foot pod and audio coaching to provide a seamless “coaching” experience. Square One’s Training Intelligence system uses biofeedback to coach you through a customized workout based on your age, gender, personal fitness level and goals. It also syncs with your iPod Shuffle so you can fire up your music while you get to work.
As training technology junkies, we put the Pear through its paces on more than just runs. Although the device is specifically designed for runners, it also performs beautifully on the field, in the gym and in the weight room.
The most enjoyable aspect of the Pear is the feedback it gives you during workouts. With its voice cues and workout tips, the Pear is like a mini fitness coach clipped to your waistband. During our first run, Pear instructed us to “start jogging at a very comfortable pace. After five minutes, I will have you increase your pace in small increments.” At one point Pear told us to “begin thinking about recovery nutrition—carbohydrates for glycogen replenishment, protein for muscle repair, and hydration to replenish lost fluids.” We immediately started picturing chocolate milk.
Whether you’re a beginner starting a walk/jog routine or an elite cross-country athlete trying for a new PR, Pear will help you push harder with feedback on your heart rate, pace, cadence, duration and accountability of a “personal coach.”
