Read and React: Bloody Confused!
The 2010 FIFA World Cup is just a few months away. And if you’re one of those Americans who, once every four years, is attracted to the sport of soccer (a.k.a. “football” to every other nation), then you should know the rules, lingo and players so you can follow the telecasts and hold up your end of the conversation.
In Bloody Confused! A Clueless American Sportswriter Seeks Solace in English Soccer, author Chuck Culpepper relates how he traveled across the pond to a country that lives and breathes soccer, and how he fell in love with a game he initially knew little about.
Although the fans spoke English, soccer lingo was practically a foreign language to Culpepper, and he had to learn quickly. From start to finish, in a humorous and informative narrative, Culpepper shares how he went from being a clueless Yank to a diehard English soccer fan. Along the way, he advises how to learn the jargon and glean the essential info that even occasional soccer fans need to know.
STACK’s Take: An extremely entertaining book. Culpepper illuminates the differences between English soccer and the American version, scopes out the Premier League, picks his favorite team and cheers it on to victory. Never mind that he’s not a Liverpool fan.
