‘Resident Evil 6’ Gets a Release Date
Resident Evil 6 will hit theaters in the summer of 2014. (Check out the trailer.)
Screen Gem has set a date for the next installment in the franchise despite the less-than-spectacular box office reception its predecessor, Retribution, received last year. The film brought in $222 million worldwide, which was lower than expected. With a $65 million budget, it was also the most expensive film in the series. The upcoming Evil 6 will likely be the last installment in this video-game adaptation series—until it is inevitably rebooted down the road.
Participation by writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson and leading lady Milla Jovovich has not been confirmed yet. But it’s highly unlikely that Sony would mess with the formula at this point. Anderson has written all of the installments in the series and directed three of the past five.
Retribution left Alice (Jovovich) and Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts) at the White House while the world outside, with the help of the nefarious Red Queen-helmed Umbrella Corporation, gathered around preparing to kill them. Thankfully, Wesker re-injected her with the T-Virus, reinvigorating her super powers. While it’s unclear what direction the new storyline will take, fans of the series can expect graphic violence true to the zombie genre, in addition to holograms galore, computer-assisted stunts and a non-sensical plot.
Shooting should start toward the end of the year. Resident Evil 6 is slated to be released on Sept. 12, 2014. Like its predecessors, Afterlife and Retribution, it will be available in 3D.
