How QB Ryan Tannehill Beats the Blitz
One of the most impressive quarterback performances of Week 9 came from a former college wide receiver in just his third NFL season.
On Sunday, Ryan Tannehill out-dueled MVP candidate Philip Rivers to lead his Miami Dolphins to an impressive 37-0 victory and his team’s third win in a row. Tannehill threw for three touchdowns and zero interceptions and posted a career-high passer rating of 125.
Tannehill used to rely on his speed and athleticism to make plays, but now he is displaying the pocket presence and vision of an elite-caliber NFL quarterback. He refined his pocket awareness in the off-season by performing cone drills that train him to stand tall in the pocket, avoid pressure and work through his progressions to find the open receiver.
For the Pocket Awareness Drill, Tannehill drops back into the pocket and is forced to step up and weave through a set of cones before throwing the ball downfield.
The simulated pass rush has improved Tannehill’s ability to see the field more clearly and drive the ball downfield.
Tannehill’s improved pocket awareness and accurate decision-making has his team poised for the post-season. For that, Tannehill is STACK’s NFL Beast of the Week.
