The Incredible Journey of Amputee Triathlete Sarah Reinertsen
STACK had the privilege of spending a day with world-renowned triathlete Sarah Reinertsen in her home town of San Juan Capistrano, Calif. Sarah was born with a condition called proximal femoral focal deficiency. She and her family were forced to make the difficult decision to amputate her left leg when she was seven years old.
Sarah’s burning desire to play sports, fueled by the taunts and ridicule she received as a child, kicked off her journey to become a triathlete. The challenge of not knowing how to swim or ride a bike did not deter her from becoming the first female amputee to compete in the Ironman World Championship.
Watch Episode One of STACK’s four-part video series highlighting Sarah’s training and nutrition regimen above. We hope you will be as inspired by her incredible story as we are.
