Upcoming Documentary Will Examine Sony Pictures Hack Attack
There was never a question of if, only when, a movie would be made about the headline-grabbing hack attack at Sony Pictures that exposed confidential details about films in production to snarky emails about celebrities, and which led to the resignation of studio co-chairman Amy Pascal.
Now comes an announcement that a documentary about the scandal is already in the works. It’s too good to pass up: behind-the-scenes studio drama, controversial leaked emails discussing and dissing popular public figures, and a major hack attack, all in one story. If this tale weren’t true, it would be difficult to imagine.
It has been confirmed that spouses Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer, the duo behind the Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning 2013 documentary “The Square,” from Netflix, are working on this untitled project. Noujaim is serving as director; Amer will produce.
This doc will not just rehash old news; it will reportedly drop new bombshells. The filmmakers will explore alternative theories about the identity of the hacker. Initially, the most likely culprit appeared to be North Korea. But suspicion soon shifted to company insiders—a theory endorsed by many in the cybersecurity community. North Korea has denied blame, and so far the only people claiming responsibility for the hack are the mysterious Guardians of Peace.
Amer was quoted by The Hollywood Reporter saying, “The Sony story is an important chapter in this larger issue,” but he declined to talk about any roadblocks encountered or divulge details of the film’s narrative. “The analysts and experts we speak to see it as the 9/11 of cyberattacks, and the implications will be felt for years to come,” he said.
