Rumor: ‘Star Trek 3’ Will Reunite Shatner, Nimoy
The latest rumor about Star Trek 3 points to the onscreen reunion of William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, who played Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, respectively, in the original series.
Badass Digest reports their planned cameos contribute to the plot progression of the movie. If true, it should reduce the chance they will be cut out at the last minute, as was Shatner’s previously scheduled appearance. If it comes to fruition, it’ll be the first time the two have appeared together as Kirk and Spock since 1991’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
Shatner reacted to the news via Twitter, warning fans not to get too excited just yet. “Let’s talk [Star Trek],” he wrote. “I don’t know anything about the current gossip. Nobody has contacted me. Right now it’s just rhetoric to cause hype.”
Also, director Roberto Orci told TrekMovie.com that it was too early to comment on the matter. He wrote, “Not in my interest to confirm or deny anything, because it limits my options while maintaining my integrity as a truth teller. The movie is not the movie ’till it’s in the theater. Until then, everything is rumor.”
Finally, during a recent interview, Nimoy, who has been battling illness, seemed to think it unlikely he would return for any real role. He said, “I’d take [the] call, but doubt I’d do any acting. I don’t want to go off on location again.”
Star Trek 3 is expected to begin filming within the next months and is slated to hit theaters in 2016.
