Syfy Channel Plans Superman Origin Drama
Man of Steel’s David Goyer is developing a Superman origin show for the Syfy channel. Entitled Krypton, the drama takes place years before the beginning of the well-known legend, during an era when the House of EI was shamed and banished. The storyline centers on Superman’s grandfather, who prepares the troubled planet for his superhero grandson’s birth, transforming it into a place of hope and equality.
Goyer came up with the idea for the series with Ian B. Goldberg, who is set to write the script and executive produce. Goldberg is best known for writing the TV series Criminal Minds and Once Upon a Time.
Krypton is being developed by Warner Horizon Television and DC Comics. It has already been likened to Fox’s Batman origin drama, Gotham.
DC-inspired projects are popping up all over cable and network TV. In addition to the shows already on the air, like The Flash on CW and Goyer’s Constantine on NBC, several other programs are in development, one of the most exciting of which is the TNT series Titans. Titans involves what is being termed a “Junior Justice League,” led by Batman’s Dick Grayson, now known as Nightwing. The new team of superheros includes Starfire and Raven, among others.
