The Foolproof Fantasy Football Snake Draft Strategy
There are many ways to draft a fantasy football team. A lot of leagues are moving to in-person offline drafts, keeper leagues or auction drafts, but the most popular and useful way is still the snake draft.
A snake draft, if you’re unfamiliar, is a style of draft where the draft order is either manually or randomly selected. Let’s say you’re in a 12-team league. Your teams will pick 1-12, then 12-1, then 1-12, then 12-1 and repeat until the draft is over. The team selecting 1st and 12th will always get two picks in a row, but then will have to wait 22 picks until their next opportunity to snag a player. (Try a daily fantasy snake draft on iOS or Android)
Typically, in a snake, you want to avoid picking first, 10th, 11th and 12th. The results usually do not favor teams in those draft positions. Historically, the third, fourth and fiftth draft position has been the sweet spot to pick from in a standard 12-team snake draft. Don’t get me wrong, you can win from anywhere. Anything can happen in fantasy football, but just know that if you’re in one of those less optimal draft positions, it’s going to take some great GM moves over the course of the season to help offset your potentially lousy draft.
No matter where you pick though, it’s good to go into the draft with a game plan. Here’s a foolproof snake draft strategy that will help you choose the best team possible and win bragging rights over your league.
