The Freakiest Athlete in College Football This Season Is…
College football is packed with young men gifted with athletic superpowers. But who’s the biggest, baddest of them all?
Bruce Feldman of The Athletic has put together an annual college football “Freaks List” for years now. Previous holders of the vaunted number one spot have included Saquon Barkley and Myles Garrett.
As far as the freakiest of the freaky for 2019, Feldman has declared it to be Iowa junior offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs.
Why? Here’s why:

Yeah, that’s Wirfs making easy work of a 450-pound clean for four reps. That’s just a stupefying amount of strength and power.
Wirfs, who’s listed at 6-foot-5, 322 pounds, also recorded a mind-boggling 35-inch Vertical Jump this off-season. In the past seven NFL Combines, only one offensive lineman has jumped higher.
The athleticism Wirfs displayed as a multi-sport athlete at Mount Vernon High School (Iowa) is the stuff of legend. He was a state champion heavyweight wrestler. He holds the school record in the shot put, boasting a PR of over 66 feet. As a member of the school’s baseball team, he hit home runs a country mile.

Wirfs was named honorable mention All-Big Ten last year. Coaches expect a big jump from him this season, and he’s shown flashes of utter dominance:
One of my favorite plays from Tristan Wirfs. Plenty of power behind his punches and blocks through the whistle. He’s going to be a fun study for the entire season. pic.twitter.com/VdhZNrFcst

Just 20 years old, Wirfs may still have more strength, speed and power yet left to develop. He’s already being projected as a potential first-round pick in next year’s NFL Draft.
