Gaming Update: ‘Titanfall,’ ‘Total War: Rome II,’ ‘GT5’
Last week, Microsoft addressed an error on Titanfall‘s website, Creative Assembly reacted to controversy about DLC for Total War: Rome II, and Sony gave an expiration date for Gran Turismo 5‘s DLC.
Titanfall Cannot Be Pre-loaded on Xbox One
Titanfall‘s game page on the official Xbox website erroneously told gamers that they could pre-load the game ahead of its March 11 launch.
“We believe in digital distribution and are proud to give gamers a variety of ways to purchase and experience their games. However, pre-purchase and pre-download for Titanfall for Xbox One will not be available from the Xbox Store,” a MS spokesperson told Polygon. “We’ll continue to strike a balance between digital distribution and its benefits, while supporting physical games purchase through our retail partners. The pre-purchase offer page was posted in error. We apologize for any confusion.”
Titanfall’s beta concluded last week. It opened up to about 2 million players and identified at least 10 “real things” for the developer to focus on in the weeks ahead. If you didn’t get a chance to play, check out the beta trailer on GameSpot.
Total War: Rome II Developer Responds to Backlash
Gamers lashed out at Creative Assembly last week, accusing the developer of withholding existing content in Total War: Rome II with the intent of later charging gamers to access it via paid DLC. At the center of the storm is a recent DLC titled Beasts of War, which is said to have added seven new units to the game, including the Camel Cataphracts and the Mercenary Naked Swords. Promotional videos pre-dating the game’s release appear to show the camel units—making it appear that they were originally included in the title but were cut so Creative Assembly could make more money.
Talking with Eurogamer, brand director Rob Bartholomew responded to the uproar by calling the camel units a “misunderstanding of what’s being shown combined with a marketing error.” Though aware that the game’s marketing hasn’t make Creative Assembly look good, he insisted that it was never their intent to mislead consumers. “At the time [that videos featuring the units were recorded], these units were not finished in terms of art, gameplay or design, and as a marketing team, we should have double-checked the likelihood of them making it into the final game,” he said. “That’s our basic human error, and I apologize for letting that through . . . We’ve put checks in place now that should prevent that in the future.”
Gran Turismo 5 DLC Won’t Be Available After April 30
Polyphony Digital and Sony announced plans to pull all DLC for Gran Turismo 5 from the PS store on April 30. If the content is already installed on your system, it should continue to work—provided you don’t delete or lose the game’s save data. To continue using the Racing Car and Course packs, you just need the free DLC Family Upgrade, which is currently available on the Gran Turismo website.
Gran Turismo TV closes its doors on March 14. The online services for the game will end on May 30. After that date, gamers will no longer have access to the Online Lobby, Museum, Community, Seasonal Events and Online Dealership features.
Gran Turismo 6 was released late last year for the PS3. Polyphony is reportedly nearly done with GT7. It could be released this year for PS4.
