Tobey Maguire and Peter Sarsgaard Star in Chess Drama ‘Pawn Sacrifice’
Tobey Maguire and Peter Sarsgaard star in the big screen drama Pawn Sacrifice, about legendary American chess prodigy Bobby Fischer (played by Maguire).
In 1956, at the age of 12, Fischer became a National Master. He won a series of other titles before becoming the only American World Champion in 1972. In that year, he was memorably caught up in Cold War tensions between America and Russia when he challenged and defeated the Soviet chess champion Boris Spassky in a match that many consider the greatest ever played.
The story focuses on Fischer’s struggles with genius and madness and the ups and downs he experienced as a kid from Brooklyn who became a political symbol and an inspiring figure throughout the world.
The cast also features Liev Schreiber (TV’s Ray Donovan), Lily Rabe (American Horror Story), Michael Stuhlbarg (Boardwalk Empire), and Sophie Nelisse, last seen in The Book Thief.
The film was directed by Edward Zwick, best known for the dramedy Love and Other Drugs. The screenplay was written by Steven Knight (Seventh Son; Eastern Promises) with additional writing credits going to collaborators Stephen J. Rivele and Christopher Wilkinson, who worked together on Ali.
In addition to starring in the picture, Maguire served as one of the film’s producers.
Pawn Sacrifice opens in select theaters Sept. 16, with a nationwide release set for Sept. 25. Watch the trailer below.
